Hershey's Maple Leaf Tutorial

Today I’m going to let my Canadian side come out, eh? Although I have lived in the United States for over 10 years now, and I love my American friends, my Canadian roots are as strong as ever. One of my friends on Splitcoaststampers, who has always shared my enthusiasm for all things Canadian, suggested I design a Hershey’s maple leaf. Thanks Gail K. (aka Basketballmom) for your suggestion. I would like to dedicate this tutorial to you.

The maple leaf was one of my most difficult design challenges to date. A maple leaf is not an easy shape to recreate, but because it is an iconic Canadian symbol, I was determined to make it work. With a little trial and error, I think I have come up with a design that looks reasonably close. I think this maple leaf would also make a cute fall favor if you make it in autumn colors.

Step One

1. To make the middle piece, start with a 7-5/8” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the 1”, 3-1/8”, 4-1/8” and 7-¼” marks.

Step Two

2. Place a piece of sticky strip on the tab end of the strip.

Step Three

3. Fold along the score lines. Remove the sticky strip and bring together to create a trapezoid.

Step Four

4. To make the filler strip for the middle piece, start with a 11” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the 1”, 2”, 3", 4", 5", 6", 7", 8", 9" and 10" marks.

Step Five

5. Fold into triangles as shown.

Step Six

6. Insert the triangle strip into the trapezoid.

Step Seven

7. Pop five Hershey’s kisses into the spaces.

Step Eight

8. To make the top piece, start with a 4” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the 1”, 2” and 3” marks.

Step Nine

9. Place sticky strip on one of the end segments.

Step Ten

10. Fold the strip along all the score lines. Remove the sticky strip and bring together to create a triangle.

Step Eleven

11. Pop a Hershey’s kiss into the triangle.

---

Step Twelve

12. Place sticky strip on the bottom of the triangle and adhere it to the middle piece. Make sure you adhere the triangle to the long side of the middle piece, NOT the short side.

Step Thirteen

13. To make the bottom piece, start with a 4” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the ½”, 1-7/8”, 2-3/8” and 3-½”.

Step Fourteen

14. Place a piece of sticky strip on the tab end of the strip.

Step Fifteen

15. Fold along the score lines. Remove the sticky strip and bring together to create a trapezoid.

Step Sixteen

16. Pop a Hershey’s nugget into the trapezoid.

Step Seventeen

17. Place sticky strip on the top of the trapezoid and adhere it to the bottom of the middle piece.

Step Eighteen

18. To create the outside of the maple leaf, start with a 10-¾” x 1” strip of card stock. Then take a deep breath. I’m going to ask you to score 19 times on one strip. If you have 19 Simply Scored markers, break them out and double check your placement before you start scoring. On the long side, score at ¼”, 1-5/8”, 1-7/8”, 2-¼”, 2-5/8”, 2-7/8”, 3-¾”, 4-5/8”, 5”, 5-3/8”, 5-¾”, 6-1/8”, 7”, 7-7/8”, 8-1/8”, 8-½”, 8-7/8”, 9-1/8” and 10-½”.

Step Nineteen

19. Place sticky strip on the following segments 1, 4, 5, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 20. The strip is scored symmetrically, so it doesn’t matter which end you start counting from.

Step Twenty

20. Fold along the score lines as shown and remove the sticky strip liners.

Step Twenty-one

21. Start by adhering one of the ends to the side of the bottom piece that holds the nugget. Each successive pair of sticky strip pieces are adhered to the sides of the three points of the maple leaf. Finally the remaining end is adhered to the side of the bottom piece.

Step Twenty-two

22. To make the stem, start with a 3-3/8” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the 5/8”, 1-5/8”, 1-¾” and 2-¾” marks. Please Note: In my photo, the marker for the 1-¾” score mark is not shown, just the dotted line. This is because the markers never fit 1/8” away from each other.

Step Twenty-three

23. Place sticky strip on both ends of the strip.

24. Fold along the score lines as shown and remove the sticky strip liner.

25. Adhere to the bottom of the nugget. You are now done, eh? Happy Canada Day to my Canadian friends.
